Our hearts swelled with both pride and excitement when Zendaya was recently honored by toy brand Mattel, who created a custom Barbie doll in her likeness. The star was obviously elated to have her iconic 2015 Oscars red carpet style commemorated by the company – especially since she is now admitting she never even played with Barbies as a kid because she didn't relate to them before.
"I didn't [have Barbies as a kid]," Zendaya said in a new interview. "They didn’t look like me, so I didn’t play with them. As a kid, my main interest was dancing. When I was 8 years old, I was in a hip-hop troupe."
"After my Oscar moment, Mattel contacted us. They specifically wanted to make a Barbie that looked like me, in my exact outfit from the Oscars," she continued. "I was so excited that Barbie wanted to diversify their brand. Now all little girls can have a Barbie that looks like them. My Barbie is in a box. I never let anyone touch her."
