We kind of screeched a bit when a brand new interview with Zayn Malik was released this morning. The singer spoke with Billboard about his new music and history with One Direction, and we've got to admit that we were excited to see what he would have to say about his former bandmates and exciting new projects.
But, in the middle of some amazing honest shares, he actually made quite a few troubling comments. We've supported the star for five years, and even understood that he needed to make creative decisions that weren't 100% what we were expecting, but now we're feeling very let down by him. Unpopular opinion? Maybe, but hear us out. Here's why:
1. He's tired of us asking when his new music is coming.
"My fans are giving me [expletive] every day. Like, ‘Where is your music? You’ve been at it for months. Give us something,'" he told the mag.
Excuse us, we're just excited, okay? We want to hear this new sound you've been hyping, especially since it was apparently amazing enough for you to leave One Direction.
2. Zayn described his "dream girl" in an objectifying way.
"I need a challenge. Also, I like girls that are a bit chunky in certain areas -- the nice areas. I like a fuller woman," he said. There's just something about the word "chunky" that's not sitting so well with us.
He did go on to say that he wanted a girl with a brain and ability for "intellectual conversation," but only after he described her body as having curves in only the right places. He can't be faulted for stating his preferences when asked, but it hurts us that he's essentially boiling down the awesome women he's dated (like Perrie Edwards and Gigi Hadid) down to physical descriptions.
3. Zayn's apparently more grateful for his fans after 1D.
“It’s a bit different now because they’re there for just me,” he told the mag about fans asking for photos with him, suggesting there's more glamour in being a solo sensation. "I can’t jump in a car and be like, ‘Yeah! Just take a picture with one of them boys.’ I want to do it now." Does that mean he never wanted to take selfies with fans before?
Fans are fans, though, whether they love your work as an individual or as part of an ensemble.
4. When asked about what he accomplished in One Direction, he said "status."
Zayn brought a lot to the band and had a lot of talent to offer the group – and now he's selling himself short by saying he was only doing what he was told and nothing he was passionate about. If all he thinks he's achieved is fame and status, that means he saw it as a means to something bigger and not something huge in and of itself.
5. He made a face when asked about Made In the A.M.
It's one thing to move on from a project, band, or even a friend group. But in the interview, Zayn said he hadn't listened to the guys' newest album (yeah, sure you haven't, like we've never looked up an ex on Instagram.) and made a face recalling the single "Perfect." That hurts. But he did mention that he liked "Drag Me Down," (LOL) so maybe there's still some hope for us Zayn girls.
