Getting ready for prom can be pretty stressful – and require some advanced planning! Luckily, celebrity makeup artist Amber Dreadon, who has worked with some of your fave celebs like Bethany Mota, Lorde, and Rita Ora, spilled her complete guide to getting prom-ready with TWIST, so you can make sure to cover all of your bases before your limo pulls up!
There's actually a lot of planning you can do ahead of time to get dance-ready. "Host a beauty-prep day with friends three to four days before prom to pamper," Amber said. "Think brow-tweezing, face masks, exfoliating, body scrubs, hair masks, pore strips, at-home mani/pedis and practicing makeup looks for the big night."
Also, make sure your eyes are all set, so you don't miss a moment of your big night. "Glasses are great, but for big beauty nights like prom, they can get in the way of letting your face shine," the makeup artist explained. "If you don’t usually wear contact lenses, visit your eye doctor in advance of prom to make sure you’re totally comfortable in your lenses and to give yourself time to create a beautiful frame-free look. I recommend ACUVUE® Brand Contact Lenses. For contact lens wearers, be sure to insert your lenses first before applying any makeup. As always, wash and rinse your hands thoroughly with a mild soap and dry with a lint-free towel before handling so you won’t transfer any oils, creams or lotions to the lenses."
Once you're all prepped, select a makeup look that emphasizes your best features. "For a red carpet approach to your eyes, apply a smokey or metallic eyeshadow. Using your finger, press a finely milled glitter to the center of the eyelid only. Next, cover any excess glitter with a coat of mascara," Amber said. "A little glitter will add dimension to the eyes without looking too overdone. Make sure to purchase from a beauty store and look for fine, mega reflective glitter that will stay on the eye without the need to use any glue. I use fine glitters all the time for on-stage performances for that little extra something."
If you're not into the glittery look, you've definitely got more options. "A natural eye is also very on trend at the moment, so try keeping it minimal with a line of metallic eyeliner over the eyelid and mascara," Amber said. "To make sure the look is prom-worthy, you can add a little oomph to your natural lashes by applying a half size lash strip to the outer corners of the lash line then pumping them up and blending with a little mascara."
Once your eye makeup is perfect, make sure you're skin is just as radiant! "To keep looking fresh with megawatt glow try using a cream highlighter," Amber explained. "You can apply it with your fingertips to the highest points of your face to look glowing from every angle! The highest points of your face (cheekbones, the bridge of the nose and on the bow of the lip before you apply lipstick) are the perfect spots to highlight!"
When your makeup is all set and you're ready to head out to the party, make sure to plan ahead so you'll have everything you need for the night. "Whenever I do makeup for a celebrity client I always pack a few essentials in their clutch for touch ups, so make sure you have yours ready for prom!" Amber shared. "Blotting papers are perfect for removing excess shine and ensuring you don’t over powder. You just press them around your t-zone and they will soak in excess oil. Also make sure to pack a lipstick or gloss and a cute slim mirror, preferably one that has a chic design on it (no messy old makeup compacts allowed!)."
All that's left is to have fun enjoying the party!
