Yara Shahidi might only be 15-years-old, but she is already wise beyond her years. When we caught up with the Black-ish star, she dropped some more amazing tidbits on us, including the most important piece of advice shes gotten over the years that has really stuck with her.
"I thrive in being different and not feeling the need to conform with what everybody is doing just because it's cool. So a lot of people always say to me to just say stay true to who you are because it's unique and interesting and fun. As a teenager, it's a period of my life when a lot of times were focused on what's the newest trend and even though it's cool and you might say 'It's trendy, I want it', it's important to have your own individuality," Yara said to TWIST.
She has adopted this motto into her life and explained exactly how she's learned to accept every aspect of her personality without ever worrying too much about the fact that since she is still growing up, she's constantly changing.
"For me, there are sometimes when I just love something I got at Forever 21 and other times when I just love this bow tie I got from Brooks Brothers. I've accepted the fact that I'm kind of preppy and unconservative and eclectic. I think it's important to not know exactly who you are at the moment and try to figure it out. I think a lot of times as teenagers you think, 'This is who I am and everything has to revolve around it.' I remember there was a time when I thought, I need to be hipster and I needed the big frame glasses, the record player. And then I realized, no I can still be Yara even though I have a record player, but I can also do all of these other things."
She's just being herself, learning one day at a time who she really is and that is simply admirable.
