Anyone who watches the hit NBC drama This Is Us has a huge soft spot in their heart for young Randall on the show, who is played by the oh-so-adorable and insanely talented Lonnie Chavis. TWIST caught up with the actor to find out all the stuff This Is Us fans are dying to know about him – from the advice his co-stars give him to what his audition was like. Check out our exclusive Q & A below.
TWIST: What was your very first audition was and what the process was like?
Lonnie Chavis: I honestly don't remember because I've had so many now. On my callback for This Is Us they brought Mackenzie [Hancsicsak], Parker [Bates] and I in to improv together and that was pretty cool.
TWIST: How do you relate to your This Is Us character Randall? Do you have anything in common?
LC: I really relate to Randall because I am confident with being myself. We also both have 3 really good friends.
TWIST: How old were you when you knew you wanted to be an actor?
LC: When I was 5 years old, I was really getting into TV and I knew that I wanted to try acting.
TWIST: Have you gotten any acting advice from your This Is Us cast mates?
LC: Yes all the time, mostly from Miss Mandy [Moore] and Mister Milo [Ventimigila] because I work with them most.
TWIST: We've seen on your Instagram that you're quite the dancer! Is that something you're passionate about? Have you taught any of your This Is Us co-stars some moves on set?
LC: I’m really passionate about dancing because it’s another way to express emotions, like acting. I’m always dancing on set, teaching and learning new moves.
LC: Working on The Thundermans was really awesome, because I’ve always watched that show! Meeting Kira was the best! She is so sweet, so kind, and so nice. I love Kira.
TWIST: If you could guest star on any other show on TV, what would it be?
LC: I would say Black-ish because it’s really funny, and I love comedy.
TWIST: Can you tell us about the upcoming projects you have going on?
LC: I’m going to start shooting White Famous soon, which is executive produced by Jamie Foxx, I play Jay Pharoah’s son it’s on Showtime and I’m a series regular. My first feature film will come out this summer called Magic Camp with Adam DeVine. I worked on Kevin Hart’s Guide to Black History which will air on the History Channel this year. I just guest starred on the CW series Supergirl, I got to do some really cool things but I don’t want to spoil it.
I also guest-starred on Disney’s Tangled which was cool because it was my first voiceover and my TV mom plays the voice of Rapunzel. I’m also working on a new film Skin with award winning film maker Guy Nattiv.
TWIST: Do you have a hidden talent that fans would be surprised to learn about you?
LC: I can actually beat box.
TWIST: Do you have any pets?
LC: I don’t have any pets because my mom says that 3 kids is enough already!
