There used to be mad love between Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj, but the singer and rapper have entered a Twitter battle, all over the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards nominations. It all began when Nicki expressed her frustration over the fact that her video for "Anaconda" wasn't chosen to be nominated in the Video of the Year category.
If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
Taylor's "Bad Blood" vid is nominated in that category, and since she is the only other female to be included in the category along with Nicki's good friend Beyonce, she took this tweet personally. We all know her star-studded music video features a ton of her famous friends. This led Taylor to call out Nicki's apparent subtweet.
@NICKIMINAJ I've done nothing but love & support you. It's unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot..— Taylor Swift (@taylorswift13) July 21, 2015
Tay and Nicki have been friends for quite some time. We all remember Tay being so vocal about her love for Nicki's song "Superbass" and they even performed the song together during Taylor's Speak Now tour. Taylor didn't really appreciate Nicki's body-shaming tweet, but the rapper was quick to defend her words, saying the tweet wasn't directed at Taylor, her music video or the ladies in "Bad Blood."
Huh? U must not be reading my tweets. Didn't say a word about u. I love u just as much. But u should speak on this. @taylorswift13— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
Nicki didn't mean to insult Taylor, but since she now has the singer's attention, she hopes that Tay will use her voice to raise awareness to Nicki's point. It seems that the "Blank Space" singer agrees.
@NICKIMINAJ If I win, please come up with me!! You're invited to any stage I'm ever on.— Taylor Swift (@taylorswift13) July 21, 2015
All caught up now?
It's a lot going on, but these girls are both advocates about empowering other women and why it's important to be supportive of one another, so let's hope this was all just one big misunderstanding. It's admirable how willing they are to speak up for what they believe is the right thing, and hopefully there isn't any long-lasting bad blood between these two.
