You may know Shane Harper best as a singer-songwriter and for his Disney Channel role in the beloved series Good Luck Charlie, but tonight you are about to see him in a whole new way. The actor is playing Robbie Gould in the television movie event, Dirty Dancing, which airs tonight at 8 PM tonight on ABC.
This is a memorable role in a totally remade version of an iconic, classic film – and the star sure knows it. When TWIST asked Shane if he was worried about viewers comparing this version to the original film starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey, he had a very definitive answer.
"Oh yeah, we’re terrified," he tells us exclusively. "Everyone understands that the comparisons are going to come. Our version of it is a musical. It's a reimagined universe that this Dirty Dancing story is happening in."
But Shane has great faith in the project he and his co-stars worked so hard on – and is excited for everyone to see it come to life.
"The script is incredible. It's Lionsgate and our producer and director and musical composer, they're all so good. It's going to be amazing, it's going to be incredible," he says. "But, we know it's going to be compared too, and I don’t want anyone to be too harshly criticized. No one’s going to be Patrick Swayze. He was a legend."
It's great that Shane made it clear that this project isn't trying to replace anything about the original film, just expose a new version to a new audience.
"It was just fun. I think everyone took it as a fun thing and just have a really great time. Not take it as seriously, in terms of what the critics are going to say, but take the craft of it seriously and take the joy of this film and what it has to offer," he shared. "Abby doing the angel lift, Abigail Breslin is playing the lead [Baby] and [when] she did her angel lift [on set] everyone [was] crying and cheering. It’s a beautiful set. Everyone was so nice. But we know the criticism is going to come. We’ll be okay. It’s a very long script, it’s a big event. I think it’s something to remember the original by, and the original cast by. What a great movie."
We'll definitely be tuning in tonight to see a fresh new take!
