Saniyya Sidney is having a moment right now. The young actress is currently working alongside some of the biggest names in Hollywood, and has several new projects due out this holiday season. TWIST caught up with the star to hear about the experience all from her perspective. Check out our exclusive Q & A with her below.
TWIST: Can you tell us all about your upcoming projects?
Saniyya Sidney: I have two films opening on Christmas day. In Fences, I play Viola Davis and Denzel Washington’s daughter. He also directs. It’s written by the incredible playwright August Wilson. I am excited to introduce his work to my generation.
In Hidden Figures, I play Taraji P. Henson’s daughter. It’s base on a true story about the three African American women who were the mathematicians behind the scenes helping the Apollo Missions go to space.
TWIST: What was it like on set of filming Fences?
SS: It was an experience I will treasure my entire life. Mr. Washington is a brilliant director. He truly cares about every actor. He made us understand how no moment is ordinary. Viola had become like a second mother to me. And the rest of the cast, I will always consider my family. Oh and it was REALLY fun!
TWIST: What's your favorite thing about acting?
SS: Creating feeling in another person. Giving the audience an amazing experience that will make them laugh, cry, and think.
I love traveling to new places. I worked for a month New Orleans for Roots. I miss it and cannot wait to go back. [And I] was in Atlanta for Hidden Figures and Pittsburgh for Fences. It makes me really happy to meet people from different places. My first time in New York was for the premiere of Roots. I'm so excited my Fences premiere will be in New York too! I love it there and am counting the seconds to see all the lights and that big, beautiful Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center.
TWIST: Have you ever picked up any tips or advice for any other actors you've worked with?
SS: Bring your heart to work. Train. Train. Oh, and did I say train? A great actor, like an athlete, works consistently on their craft which is why they have a career. Allow yourself to fall in love with what you do. Always seek the truth in the moment.
TWIST: If you could guest-star on any TV show, what would it be?
SS: Gotham!!!! I love the story-lines and the characters. I love comic book movies and TV shows. I think I would make an AWESOME superhero!!!!
TWIST: What's the best advice you've ever gotten from a family member?
SS: My Daddy always tells me to be myself. I don't have to try and be Batgirl or Wonder Woman. Just be myself and give 110% and that will be enough.
TWIST: Who is your biggest role model?
SS: My Mommy. She works so hard to take are of our family and to keep everything together. Sometimes I think she is Superwoman.
TWIST: Do you have any Thanksgiving traditions or favorite holiday foods?
SS: Just the family getting together is always something I look forward to. And if there is a holiday that doesn't have mac and cheese and egg nog, then we will not speak about that holiday ever!!!
TWIST: What's it like having so many new projects coming out this holiday season? How will you be celebrating?
SS: It feels like Santa was very good to me this whole year! I consider it a blessing that I was able to be part of some really cool projects and work with some of the best people in the business both in TV and film. I'm gonna celebrate with the family by going to the movies! We're all going to go and check them out and try and sneak in some egg nog.
