A character on Riverdale is going to look very different once season two rolls around. It was announced by the producers of The CW series that Ross Butler will no longer be playing the role of Reggie and he will be recast. We know, HOW?! Well, there's actually a really good — yet kind of sad — reason for the switch-up.
As it turns out, Reggie is set to have more of a presence in the new episodes and because of scheduling conflicts, Ross won't be able to film when the show needs him.
"We love what Ross did with the role of Reggie [this season], but because of his commitments to other projects, we couldn’t use him nearly as much as we would have liked," the series creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa said in a statement to TVLine. "[Next season], we want more Reggie on our show — he’s Archie’s rival! — and because Ross is unavailable to come back to Riverdale, we’re looking for a new Reggie. Those are big shoes to fill, but we’re confident we can find an actor who is as funny and [hot] as Ross. And of course we all wish Ross the best."
It's obviously sad to say goodbye to an actor who you've already come to know and love. It's going to be an adjustment seeing someone else portraying Archie's biggest rival! This really does come as a surprise since back when the network announced the new series had been picked up for season two, Ross shared a precious group pic of the cast out to dinner together, and he was looking forward to making more episodes.
"#Riverdale picked up for a second season! Thanks for tuning in everyone, were all so excited to keep it rollin!" he wrote in the caption.
So as much of a bummer as it is to see Ross no longer on the show as Reggie, there is an upside. He's working on other projects, and since he was a main character in the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why, this might possibly mean a season two of that show may be happening. It's been up in the air as to whether the buzzed about show would be coming back for more episodes and perhaps this is confirmation. Or we want to take it that way!
Ross could easily be working on other projects as well, since he is rather busy! But even if he will no longer be on Rvierdale, there is one thing he can take away from his time on the show: the friendship he made with the other cast members. He just recently spent some time with those who were at the Coachella music festival and Archie himself, KJ Apa went to the 13 Reasons Why premiere to support his bud.
