Today's the day! Put your squishy red nose on and snap a selfie, because it's Red Nose Day 2017! Icons like One Direction, Ed Sheeran, 5 Seconds of Summer, and more have all been part of the fundraiser's annual television programming and campaigning, while more stars like Zendaya, Olivia Holt, Laura Marano, and more teamed up with the cause to rock their own red noses in some super cute portraits. You may have even seen some of your fave stars posting pics to their social media this year. We're breaking down exactly what you can expect to see this year.
What is Red Nose Day?
So what is the celebration all about? It's the perfect blend of entertainment, comedy, giving back, and raising awareness for those in need. The annual television event and fundraiser's goal is to end child poverty by raising money and awareness for kids around the world. The non-profit organization Comic Relief actually started this event in the UK in 1988, and after it was a hugely popular success, it ventured over to the United States in 2015.
The iconic red noses are silly and clown-like, and they never fail to bring a smile to viewers' faces. That's why they've become a symbol for the fundraiser: even though child poverty is certainly no laughing matter, coming together through laughter – the world's universal language! – in support of amazing causes is really beautiful. (You can pick yours up at Walgreens and Duane Reade stores for $1, with 50 cents out of each purchase leading up to June 3 will be donated to the cause.)
Where and when can you watch Red Nose Day?
This year in the US, you will be able to catch three brand new fundraising events on TV, hosted by NBC.
At 8 PM, you can watch Celebrity Ninja Warrior for Red Nose Day, where celebrities will be paired up with 'elite ninjas' who will train them for the challenging course.
Next up at 9 PM, you'll be able to catch In Running Wild with Bear Grylls for Red Nose Day, where the host, Bear Grylls, will take legendary actress Julia Roberts to Kenya on a mission to deliver vaccines to those in need.
Then at 10 PM airs The Red Nose Day Special that is hosted by comedian Chris Hardwick. This highly-anticipated event features original comedy, musical performances and films.
This year, a special Love Actually sequel sketch will be part of the programming, and we can't wait to see it happen.
All of the events are part of a fundraising telethon, which means as you watch the entertaining and educational programs with your family, you can call in or go online to make a donation to support Comic Relief's efforts. Sounds like a win-win all around.
