You may just be getting to know Peyton Elizabeth Lee from her starring role on the brand new Disney Channel series, Andi Mack, but now the actress is letting fans learn about her in a totally different way. In celebration of Asian/Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Peyton filmed an incredible video with Disney where she talks about her Chinese roots and her immediate family's unique and inspiring story.
"Every family has a story," Peyton shares in her video. "The story of how my family came to America is amazing."
"I am one half Chinese from my dad's side," she explains. "My grandmother was born in mainland China, and moved to the island of St. Lucia so that my grandfather could be a doctor there. There was only one doctor on the entire island. My grandfather unfortunately died, and my grandmother was left alone there with my dad and my uncle. She wanted a better life for them."
"She moved to America, and started a hamburger stand so that she could make money," Peyton shares about her grandma. "She was so brave and independent, and my dad says I get my independent streak from her."
Peyton shares that her family keeps special Chinese traditions alive, even though they are in the United States.
"Every year we go to Chinese New Year, and all of my cousins and aunts and uncles come together, and it's really fun," she says in the clip. "My Asian heritage holds a special place in my heart. It reminds me that I'm different, and that being different is important and exciting."
