BUNK'D super fans love actor Nathan Arenas and his fun Disney Channel character Jorge Ramirez, and it's easy to see why. Not only is he hilarious and entertainingly mischievous onscreen, but IRL he's multi-talented and super humble. TWIST recently chatted with the 11-year-old actor, who spilled what has journey on the show has been like from first joining the cast until now. Check out our exclusive Q&A below.
TWIST: What was it like when you met your BUNK'D co-stars for the very first time, and how has the cast's relationship changed or stayed the same since then?
Nathan Arenas: When I met them the first time it was in my third audition and it was just incredible but I was very nervous. My legs were shaking a lot.
TWIST: Were there any cast members you clicked with right away?
NA: I feel like the person I clicked with first was either Karan [Brar] or Kevin [Quinn] because they are literally like big brothers and definitely role models and I've also learned a lot from the whole cast and I love all of them because I consider them family!
TWIST: Had you been a fan of Jessie before auditioning for BUNK'D, and what was that like joining the cast for the spinoff?
NA: Jessie was honestly my favorite show on Disney Channel so I knew everyone's name and joining the spin off was even better, because when they called me telling me that I was going to work with everyone on the show I was like "Whoa...!"
TWIST: Did you get any advice from any of the actors you've worked with?
NA: I did get some advice from Karan, which I'm definitely glad he told me. He told me about my camera angles and a ton of other stuff which, like I said, I'm glad he told me!
TWIST: Have you ever found any funny props or costumes on set?
NA: Last year for the end of Season 2, we did a prop and wardrobe sale where you pick out the stuff from either Jessie or BUNK'D and you can buy it. I found a lizard outfit that I later found out that Karan wore it for Season 4 of Jessie in there Halloween episode.
TWIST: You guys have had some great costumes so far, what has been your favorite?
NA: So there is this episode where I basically dress up like a bear, but I can't say too much about since it hasn't come out yet but that was my favorite wardrobe!
TWIST: Have you ever witnessed (or been part of!) a blooper while filming?
NA: I actually have been part of a TON of bloopers which one of them ended up airing. So in Episode 12 "Luke Is Back," the one where there is an archery fight? If you look closely right before they fire all the arrows at me on the right corner of the screen, there is a big red and yellow inflatable thing and you can kind of see my legs fly up. That was me doing a scorpion which HURT REALLY BAD!!
TWIST: Are there any ways you're like any your character Jorge or can relate to him?
NA: Well there is definitely a lot of the younger me in Jorge that I find so fascinating, like all the costumes and the misunderstandings but all of that mainly shows in Season 2. But also Jorge is maturing a lot more, and by mature I mean getting weirder since that's his way of showing that!
TWIST: What is your favorite thing that you've gotten to experience because of BUNK'D, or on the show?
NA: Because of BUNK'D I have been able to go to a lot of events, and do interviews like right now as we speak which I absolutely love doing, and I have been able to visit schools, and have people actually recognize me.
TWIST: Do you find that fans recognize you a lot when you're out, and what is that like? Is it exciting, strange?
NA: When fans recognize me, it is absolutely amazing to see the looks on their faces when they realize who I am. It's amazing because it gives me a hint that I'm doing a good job on the show.
TWIST: Did you always want to be an actor since you were really little?
NA: It mainly started with music before acting, because ever since I learned how to talk and walk. I learned both around the same time. I would tell my mom to record me singing and playing guitar, and I would sing to either the Rolling Stones or AC/DC. After that my love for television started around the when I was 3.
TWIST: Who are some of your acting role models?
NA: My acting role models would be Jim Carrey because of his power with comedy but mainly for his inspirational speeches. My other acting role model would be Johnny Depp because of his ability to switch in and out of a certain mood in his characters and that just amazes me.
TWIST: How about real-life role models in your life who you look up to?
NA: My real-life role models would definitely be my mom because she has taught me SO much and she is a single mom and she has done so much for me and my sister! My other real life role model is David Blaine, and I know he's a magician but I have read so many books on him and he is amazing because apart from his tricks he is not afraid of death. He has risked his life so many times, but why you ask? For entertainment. So that people feel either afraid or excited and it's also about showing how people can beat life itself, and also because I do magic too. The fact he can overcome that fear is just absolutely incredible!
TWIST: What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given throughout your career, and who was it from?
NA: The best piece of advice would be that you can do anything even if there is a certain obstacle telling you that you can't, because the more you say that, the harder it is. Everything is possible even if you think some things are impossible because that word "impossible" shouldn't even be in anyone's vocabulary! That came from my mom.
