Have you ever had a dream that you could turn your passion into your very own company? That's exactly what happened for jewelry designer Ariel Neman, who started a unisex accessories line called Regime NY as a teenager, and got noticed by a ton of the top stylish celebs out there. TWIST recently chatted with Ariel and got the story behind the collection, and where it all began. Check out our exclusive Q & A below.
TWIST: What inspired you to first start your jewelry line? How old were you first thought of the idea, and when it debuted?
Ariel Neman: I loved fashion and being creative, and I thought jewelry would allow me to express that creativity. There are limited ways to reinvent a t-shirt, but when it comes to jewelry there are endless innovations.
I was 18 at the time when the idea came about, I knew there was a void in the marketplace and I wanted to take that opportunity to fill that void.
TWIST: What was your original goal with your line? Who did you hope to reach with your designs?
AN: Originally I wanted to create a few designs that would build the foundation of the brand and that meshed with my concept. I was hoping for anyone to take a look of what I was doing and for anyone to give me a chance.
TWIST: Did you have an inspiration or mentor along the way?
AN: My family’s encouragement and support was enough to inspire me to begin the line. But, starting off, I would do my best to connect with the top contributors in the fashion industry. I wanted to learn from the best, listen to their advice and see how we can work together.
TWIST: Do you remember the moment when you hit your first milestone? Whether that was making a sale, getting a piece photographed...?
AN: My first milestone occurred a few months just when starting the brand when I met Joey Bada$$. I showed him some images of my pieces and he mentioned he loved the line. After the next few weeks he wore my necklace and bracelet on stage to his first ever Coachella performance.
TWIST: Can you tell us about some of the collaborations you've worked on along the way?
AN: I worked on bracelet collaboration with Wiz Khalifa for his tour with Snoop Dogg. I worked on a necklace for Game of Thrones star Kristian Nairn. I have some exciting collaborations coming in the very near future.
TWIST: Can you tell us about the celebrities that were spotted wearing your pieces, and how that all happened?
AN: Some incidences occurred when a friend connected myself with Jamie Foxx, and Hailey Baldwin. Johnny Depp occurred through a marketing team that took a chance on me. Post Malone and Justin Bieber occurred while meeting them backstage at their concert.
TWIST: Who is someone you'd love to collaborate with or see wearing your stuff?
AN: I think working with Zayn would be a cool experience since his aesthetic resembles closely with the line.
TWIST: What message do you hope to share with your story?
AN: It doesn’t matter how old you are, where you come from, or what your background is. Using one’s resources and working hard enough will take you where you want to go.
TWIST: What's your advice for our teen readers who may have a great idea they want to turn into a company of their own?
AN: Setting a clear vision and short-term goals can go a long way. Always be persistent, and no matter what treat everyone the same. You never know who others know and how they can help you in the long run.
