Matthew Espinosa is about to make his film debut with the upcoming movie Be Somebody, which officially comes out on Friday. When TWIST caught up with the actor ahead of the premiere, we asked him to explain how he relates to his superstar character, fictional pop star Jordan Jaye – and how he's going to totally shock fans with his role.
"I think I'll surprise [long term fans] because [the movie is not] my YouTube videos, where they're really witty, weird, and all over the place type videos," Matthew tells us exclusively. "This is a very artistic, slowed-down movie for you to really take in and understand. It's a different genre than what most people are used to with me, but I'm very excited for people to see it because I wanted to be challenged as an actor."
"There were definitely moments when I was looking at the script and I was like, 'wait, this happened to me, two or three months ago, that was crazy'!" Matthew explains. "[But] over all, [though] there were a few things that Jordan and I had a similarity in – which had to do with fans and the support they were giving, and the REAL dedicated support. You can tell from the beginning of the movie how dedicated Jordan's fans are. But over all Jordan and I are pretty different."
So we had to ask what Matthew thinks the biggest way he is so not Jordan.
"The things Jordan wears! He's got these bright red shoes, tight leather pants, and his hair slicked up where he's looking like a paint brush or something where it's all up," he shares. "I would just never do any of that stuff, and it's fun to play someone that I'm not, because that's what acting is."
We're really looking forward to seeing him in this role – and those costumes he describes!
