Laura Marano is currently making the transition from Austin & Ally actress to a solo artist, and that journey is something she's so ready for right now. But the star has admitted she wasn't always so sure that she could handle a career in music, and playing Ally Dawson helped her realize she could do it! In a new interview with YSBNow, Laura explained that watching Ally get more comfortable in expressing her musical talents over the seasons of her Disney Channel show helped her grow as well!
"I always wanted to be in music, always," Laura said. "I remember reading the part of Ally and thinking, she’s really like me. She’s awkward, she likes writing songs, she loves school - I connect with her. I wanted it so badly. And then I got the role and it was a dream come true because it was a show about music. It was like two of my favorite things coming together. It was perfect."
Though she was bold about acting, Laura realized she was shy and unsure about her place in the music world. "Just because you’re in one world, doesn’t mean you’ll be in the other," she said. "I was always secretly writing, but I think I still wasn’t totally secure with myself musically. It was this conflicting mindset of, ‘I want this so badly’ and ‘I’m so insecure about it.’"
Laura really grew up by playing the role of Ally, and as her character grew less insecure on the show, so did Laura in real life! "As Ally gained more confidence in her music ability over the course of the show, I was getting more confident in the writing sessions I was doing," Laura dished. "When we were filming the last season, I was like, 'okay, I’m ready. I’m ready for this.'"
