If you haven't noticed, we're just a tiny bit obsessed with braids this summer. Everyone from Zendaya and Demi Lovato to Bella Thorne have recently donned a pretty plait, giving us major hair envy. And just when we thought we've seen every type of braid imaginable, we spotted Jennette McCurdy's Instagram photo of her fun updo. Immediately, we said to ourselves, "We need to DIY that!"
So we reached out to N.Y.C.-based Fekkai hair stylist Hana Chong to tell us how we can recreate this braid-meets-bun hairstyle at home. Surprisingly, it's not hard at all! Check out the step-by-step below:
Section hair in two halves across the back of the head — a top portion and a lower portion.
Use a hair clip to separate the top and bottom portions, then start braiding the lower portion into a French braid. Braid using the shape of the back of your head as a guide, integrating pieces of hair as you go.
Finish the French braid and secure it with a small elastic. You will have a little tail of hair left, but this will be incorporated into the side bun.
Moving onto the top portion of hair: Sweep hair onto the right side of your face and secure the back with a bobby pin.
Create a low, side ponytail with the top portion of hair you gathered in Step 4. Secure the base of your ponytail with an elastic.
You can tease or curl the ponytail to give it texture. After you are done adding texture, start wrapping the ponytail around the base to create a low bun. Add bobby pins as you are wrapping the hair into a bun. (Note: You can tuck the "tail" of hair from Step 3 into your bun.)
Finish your look with a light application of hairspray like Fekkai’s Sheer Hold hairspray ($10) to maintain your style.
Do you like Jennette's braided up do as much as we do? Let us know in the comments!
