Pretty Little Liars is synonymous with fashion. In fact, its wardrobe is so highly coveted that Aéropostale just launched a collection designed by PLL's costume designer Mandi Line. But the show's now infamous signature style could have been very, very different.
"At first I turned down the show," Mandi exclusively told Twist at Aéro's line launch event in N.Y.C. last week. "I did that show Greek. So, when I got offered PLL I was like, 'I don’t want another kids show. I'm over it.'"
Luckily, Mandi changed her mind. "Then I watched the pilot, and I was like, 'Are you kidding me? This is crazy!'" she said, adding that she'd only accept the job under one condition. "I went in for my first interview with Marlene King, the show's creator, and I said, 'I'll make this the best dressed show on television, but you can't tone me down.'"
After dressing Lucy Hale's character for one of the show's first scenes when Aria runs to Ezra in the rain, PLL producers were on board with Mandi's work. "[The producer] had tears in her eyes and said, 'That’s Aria!'" Mandi said. "And I [thought], 'I’m going to get a clothing line out of this.'" It turns out she was right.
