18-year old artist DOMENICO is making his debut track a totally unforgettable one! The multi-instrumentalist filmed an awesome video for his piece, "Ultralight Beam x Confessions," which is a really cool Kanye West/Usher mashup. Below, he tells TWIST all about the project.
In order to be considered great at what you do, you have to compete with the best, am I right? That’s why I went toe to toe with these two cultural icons.
I was in middle school during Kanye's "808s & Heartbreak” era and it instantly grabbed my ears. I decided to research more modern classics in the same realm, such as "Future Sex/Love Sounds" by J.T., and of course, "Confessions" by Usher. This was the music for me and would shape my own sound in the years to come. Fast forward to today, the day of release of my first official foray into being an artist, and I’ve made the decision to cover the greats ahead of showing the world my own original music. It’s no easy triumph being able to reinvent a Kanye West anthem running along side R&B royalty like Usher.
I knew that the song needed to feel like a DOMENICO production. Although this is the first of many, it has always been important to me that my music sets a certain vibe and no matter how different my releases are from each other moving forward, they all have a similar DNA. I was raised on Timbaland and Dr. Dre, so you can fault them for that influence. Even though the basic skeleton was predetermined, I wanted to make these pop records, well… pop even more. That’s why I introduced electric guitar, stacked vocal harmonies, and a total reinvention of the chord changes to take you beyond that which a basic cover would.
When it came to recording the video, I made sure to showcase my live performance chops. The visual of what I’m creating is just as important as the music, i.e. Beyonce’s “Lemonade.” … I really do apologize for not having Becky in my video. Instinctually, I get just as excited about the process as the product and I wanted to share that with all you, taking you on the journey of building the track from the most fundamental drum sequence to a harmonic crescendo.
That’s enough talking, hit play and vibe out.
