It's no secret that Debby Ryan is full of advice and wisdom. So when we had our latest chat with her, we first asked her to share some of her confidence-boosting tips with us, but she actually shared a lot more than that. The actress dished the way she boosts her own self-esteem by writing down daily affirmations and sharing with friends to tell them what she's thankful for – and the process is really beautiful.
"This is so crazy, but I was going through a really dark period and I was just emotionally like, you know, we just as girls, we don't feel pretty and everything," Debby shares with TWIST. "So it had just been a lot for me, and I said, 'every night I'm going to write down one thing that I did that day that scared me, and that I'm proud of myself for.' Whether it was like, I don't know, take a really long hike when I was feeling super tired, and be like, 'wow I'm stronger than I thought'. Or like, talking to someone or smiling at that cute boy, or whatever it is, and you write it like, 'it scared me but I did that today'."
"It makes you realize, every single night, that there were moments that day that you were stronger than you thought that you were," she continues. "And also, it makes you realize the next day that you want to be like, 'I'm going to do this because it scares me, and I'm going to write it, and I'm going to feel like I have superpowers, that's awesome!'"
In addition to boosting her boldness by writing about the scary situations she's tackled, she also makes sure to reflect back on things she's thankful for – beyond just Thanksgiving time.
"Every morning, [I] write three things that [I'm] grateful for. Beginning and ending your day not with like your phone or people around you, but just you, your journal or wherever you write things, and things you're grateful for," she says. "My friend Jeff? Literally every morning we text each other 3 things that we're grateful for. Sometimes that's the only thing we text each other all day, but it has honestly completely changed the way I feel about myself because when you think about, 'wow I'm really thankful for work opportunities.' You have to realize,** I'm living the dream, and I get told no a hundred times for every yes that I hear. Maybe a thousand times for every yes that I hear.** But you know that I'm grateful for that one yes, and I'm going to fight for it and work for it. When you write it down every morning, it gives you that confidence, that this is something that I've fought for, or also this is something that was just given and dealt, and I'm going to be a really good steward of."
"Doing three gratitudes in the morning and doing one thing that scared me at night kind of motivates you to live a more intentional life, which boosts your confidence, because if nothing else, you don't even have time to feel insecure," Debby shares. "You're like, 'oh I would sit and cry in the mirror and change my outfit 5 times like I did last week, but you know what, I have a yoga class to take. And I don't know, I've never done it before, and I'm terrified, and I'm probably going to die, but I'm going to do it anyway and write about it tonight.' Somehow that becomes more intentional and more empowering. That to me is the biggest thing for self-love, living your own life."
