XOXO, TWIST

TWIST: How did you get into DJ-ing? DJ Tay James: DJ-ing was sort of an outlet for me to display my talent. When I was growing up, there were sports, but I knew I wasn't going to be an athlete. I didn't think that was going to happen, but one thing that was recurrent in my life every year was music. I was always involved in music somehow. It was either by performing in talent shows or what not, just trying to find my niche. I was watching MTV Spring Break and DJ Scribble was up there killing it. And I was like, 'Who is this guy? Scribble, he's killing it right now. He's having a great time doing what he wants to do and he's controlling the party. There's no celebrity out there. It's just him.' He was the main event, so I was like, 'I want to do exactly what that guy's doing.' So I started DJing from there. I didn't know exactly what it was. I was able to get some turntables from my dad for Christmas. And there it went. It started from there.

TWIST: How did you start working with Justin Bieber? TJ: My mutual friend, DJ Boogie, called me and he's like, 'I might have a gig for you,' and I was like, 'Cool.' I was DJ-ing a lot, but I knew there was more in store for me. I knew it was time for me to get to the next level. And for that to happen, Bieber called, you know what I mean? I got that call, and then I was gone.

TWIST: What's it like being on tour with Justin? TJ: It's amazing! It's a blessing. I'm definitely blessed, that is one thing I will say. Just being able to travel the world, to see everything, you know? It's a lifetime experience. He has definitely given me the opportunity to do a lot more with my craft. So I'm happy just to be here.

TWIST: Are you excited for the Believe tour? Are you guys going to do anything different with that? TJ: I cannot wait! I know most likely I'll be opening up. I opened up for him last year. They give me 20 minutes before the show and I'll be able to DJ for thousands of people, hundreds of thousands of people, you know? It's an opportunity that no one else really gets. And he gave me that opportunity, so this year's definitely going to be a more crazy experience. It's like the album Believe. It's a transitional album so his tour has to be transitional for sure.

TWIST: Do you and Justin hang out a lot off stage? TJ: I was just with him last night until the wee hours of the morning for the release party. Besides him being like, quote unquote, my boss and whatnot, he's also a good friend. He's like a little brother to me in the same way. So we're definitely close on that end.

TWIST: Do you have any interesting facts about Justin that not a lot of people may know? TJ: Yeah, definitely. One thing that I will say that a lot of people probably don't know, but he is definitely a loyal person. Our team is loyal and that's something I want people to know about him. He's a good kid! I really haven't had any issues with him. We're like a family and he watches out for his own. And that's one thing I admire about him. And the fact that he likes to DJ and play 2k12 on his Xbox all the time until the wee hours of the morning. It's what we do. It's how we have fun. You know, a lot of people may not know that about him or see that side of him. All they see is the artist and stuff. But he's just a regular kid.

TWIST: What song off of the Believe album do you think is going to blow everyone out of the water? TJ: Well, luckily, I was able to make my way onto the album. I'm scratching on the song with Drake called 'Right Here.' And I feel like that's a good transitional song for all crowds. All ages and all races are going to like that one.

TWIST: What is Justin like when he's not on stage? TJ: He's just like any other 18-year-old. He's definitely still a kid but at the same time he's more mature than most people I know that are my age. He's a good kid. We just have fun honestly.

TWIST: Is there anyone else other than Justin that you would love to work with in the future? TJ: Honestly, I wouldn't want to DJ for any other artist right now. Justin's given me all the experience I want as far as that. And at the same time, I don't want to be a DJ for artists for the rest of my life, but right now this is where I'm going to be. I don't see myself going anywhere else from Bieber. I'm working for him until he tells me he doesn't need me anymore.

TWIST: Thanks, DJ Tay James! TJ: Thanks, TWIST!
