Hey TWIST readers,
We recently caught up with singer and songwriter Missy Modell! In addition to making her own music, Missy has been featured in Perez Hilton's cover song contests THREE times for her re-mastered versions of Lady Gaga's "Marry the Night," Usher and David Guetta's "Without You" and Katy Perry's "The One That Got Away." How cool?! We talked about her music and more! Check out our exclusive interview with Missy HERE!
TWIST: Can you tell us how you got your start in music? Missy: I've been singing my whole life, but when I was in college, I was really active in the community and did a capella groups. I had a '90s cover band and was in a gospel choir. Literally, any possible way I could get myself out there. Afterward, I just started working with a bunch of different people in the city and just kind of went from there. I started meeting as many people as I possibly could, working with as many people as possible.
TWIST: You've done quite a bit! Is there anybody from the '90s you really love? Missy: Britney Spears! I love early Britney. But it's pretty eclectic. I like a lot of different people.
TWIST: How would you describe your own sound? Missy: I like to write about things that are positive and upbeat, that makes people think, but at the same time, makes them forget what they're doing.
TWIST: Do you write your own lyrics and your own music? Missy: I do. I like to collaborate as well, though.
TWIST: Where do you draw your inspiration from when you're writing? Missy: I really like to write about things that are personal; things that are going on in my life or maybe the lives of people close to me. I can be inspired by a ladybug on the street or by a story someone told me. It really just pops up in random places. Living in New York City has definitely given me a lot of material to work with.
TWIST: You've been participating in the PerezHilton.com contest. How did you choose your covers? You've done Katy Perry's "The One That Got Away" and Lady Gaga's "Marry the Night." Missy: He actually chooses the covers. Every month, he's been doing this competition. I feel like it's a really great way to get yourself out there. And it's challenging, because you think of doing a cover yourself, and you'll be like, "Okay, I'll make this different," but he really makes you think outside the box because you have such competition from other people.
TWIST: When you're assigned which song you're going to do, how do you usually approach that? Missy: I play guitar, so at first, I try to come up with kind of a different melody from the song's originally melody. I want to make it a little bit different because that's kind of the foundation to any song. I also just analyze the song to death. I think I listened to Katy Perry's song over 300 times. I'm not even kidding. I know every single chord change and random instrument that pops up. It's funny. I kind of deconstruct and I make it my own.
TWIST: Is there anybody that you'd like to cover that you haven't yet? Missy: I love One Republic and Avril Lavigne. I'm into those two right now. I go through phases where I'll listen to artists and obsess over them and just listen to everything they've ever done.
