With prom season just around the corner, we could not be more excited that Disney's Prom is out in theaters now! You might recognize Yin Chang from her role in the film - or as the hilarious geek-girl-gone-mean Nelly Yuki in Gossip Girl - but there is so much more to this NYC-based actress! TWIST caught up with Yin to talk all about filming Disney's must-see spring movie, as well as her own real-life prom memories (you'll never guess what she wore!) Check out our exclusive interview below!
TWIST: Tell us all about the movie Prom. What was it like being part of such a huge film?
Yin: Prom is a really honest, coming of age movie - with a huge ensemble cast, so everyone can relate to somebody! My character's name was originally a different name but they renamed the character. It's actually named after my mom. Mei is a senior and she has a boyfriend. They're the "it" couple in high school. Everyone thinks they're going to go to college and get married but she has a secret that's going to impact the relationship.
TWIST: Other than it being named after your mom - so cool! - are you anything like your character?
Yin: Oh, yes. She's very artsy and I was quite artsy in high school. I wanted to do fashion design. I didn't have a long-term relationship in high school like Mei did, but I knew what it felt like to be connected to someone like that and then having to break away.
TWIST: So, what was your own real-life prom experience like?
Yin: I went to prom by myself! Well, I went with a group of friends but they all had dates. I also made my own prom dress. It was turquoise! It was flowy and I felt like a princess. But I wasn't crazy about my prom. Disney's prom - the movie Prom - was way better than my prom ever was!
TWIST: The dance scenes were pretty amazing! So, what's up next for you? Any plans to return to the Upper East Side on Gossip Girl?
Yin: My character, Nelly Yuki, was a really fun character to play! I loved the glasses! But I actually just finished shooting a FOX pilot yesterday called Weekends at Bellevue. I play Dr. Daisy Wong and I'm the chief resident of the ER department. It was my first time playing a doctor. My parents are really proud!
