Hey TWIST readers,
TWIST recently chatted with American Idol runner-up Lauren Alaina! Lauren just released her first studio album, Wildflower, and it rocks! We talked to the country singer about the album, being on tour, her fellow Idol contestants and more! Check out our exclusive interview below!
TWIST: So can you tell me a little about the album?
Lauren: I picked songs that relate to me and my life and things that have happened to me or people that I'm close with. It's kind of about a young teenage girl's life in a small town.
TWIST: What song on the album means the most to you?
Lauren: They all mean something different to me, but right now one of my favorites is "Wildflower." It talks about this young girl who is so special and just perfect they way that she is, but doesn't think she is. She picks herself apart and always thinks she's not good enough. As teenage girls, that's what we do. It's what I do. It's what my best friend does. We all do that. It takes a lot to be able to love yourself. I had a problem with that when I was on American Idol, growing up in front of millions and millions of people. When you're a teenage girl, you grow up a lot from 15 to 16 to 17 years old. That song really touched me because it talks about how this girl is so amazing, and she has no idea. That's a problem with young girls right now. We can't help it. We just always compare ourselves with other females or put ourselves down in some way, but everyone is special in their own way, and I hope that with this album and that song in particular, young girls will realize how awesome they really are.
TWIST: What was it like being on such a huge tour with the American Idols live tour?
Lauren: It was really awesome! I got to be in front of my fans and talk to them and meet them, thank them for putting me in the position they put me in, for making all my dreams come true and supporting me and believing In me, even when I couldn't believe in myself. I'm just really thankful to have been able to go on that tour and do what I love.
TWIST: What other contestants were you closest to or did you spend the most time with on tour?
Lauren: I spent the most time with Pia [Toscano] and Thia [Megia] for sure, but probably the most with Pia.
TWIST: After Idol, you've become an inspiration to girls around the world, but who are some of your biggest idols and influences?
Lauren: I would say Taylor Swift because she always has appropriate songs for young girls to sing. I can always relate to her songs. If I get upset, I listen to one of Taylor's songs [about] bashing a boy, and it makes me feel better. Then I'll definitely say Carrie Underwood because she's just... Carrie Underwood. She's amazing. She started the way I did. Then Miranda Lambert because she's got my personality. She's got a spitfire attitude and she's not afraid to show it. I love those three.
TWIST: Besides Carrie, who is your favorite past Idol contestant?
Lauren: Katie Stevens! I loved her when she was on the show. I got to meet her, and now she's one of my best friends. My favorite from all the past seasons would be her.
TWIST: You're 17, so is it hard for you to balance you career and school at the same time?
Lauren I feel like nothing in life comes easy. You have to work for everything you do. I'm a hard worker and I love a challenge, so I picked a really good job for that. School is definitely hard to balance, but I'm really smart and I make straight A's. I do [my schooling] on the computer now, and I'm still a student at my school. I get to go to prom and graduate with my friends. That's really important to me. I wish I could go back to school and sit in classrooms with my friends, but I know that they're back there supporting me. When I get home, I get to see them, so it's something to look forward to.
