TWIST recently got a chance to talk with Hayley Kiyoko! We chatted about everything, from her new movie Lemonade Mouth, to her band The Stunners and touring with Justin Bieber! She even shared her best love advice! Check out the interview below, and let us know what you think in the comments!
T: First of all, could you tell us about Lemonade Mouth, and your character?
HK: Lemonade Mouth is about the challenge of five teenagers trying to survive high school. They come from all different walks of life and they learn how to support and band together to create this band. And Stella is the new girl, and she's a very stubborn, headstrong, vivacious leader, who yearns for attention from her parents. So she takes this opportunity and starts this band. They get her parents' attention. Her self-expression and style is very left of center. And she's quite spontaneous, which sometimes gets her and her friends in a lot of trouble.
T: What does your character play in the band?
HK: Stella plays the electric guitar. She's the lead guitarist.
T: Okay, cool. We also read that you are in a band yourself. Can you tell me a little bit about your band The Stunners?
HK: It's a five-girl, all pop group and we sing and we dance, so it's a little different from Lemonade Mouth. We opened for Justin Bieber recently this summer. That was insane! We have a single coming out this first quarter so I'm excited about that. It's a lot of fun, they're all my good friends, and so it's very different, but it's fun to do both.
T: So what was it like to tour with Justin Bieber? Do you have any awesome stories about that?
HK: Oh, we had a great time, I'm sure you all heard about the water fights (laughs) on the tour and that was so much fun. It was fun to be on a kids tour, because pretty much everyone was a young adult to a teenager, so we all just had a blast, you know, we all got to do what we love to do and be a kid while doing it.
T: Did you get to hang out with Justin?
HK: Yeah, we saw Justin, we saw Justin every day. You know we toured with him. It's funny because some of the girls were like, "Have you met Justin Bieber?" It's like, well, we kind of were on tour with him, so I would assume so, that'd be a little odd if we hadn't. He's just like this disappearing ghost. Yeah, no, he's really cool. His whole camp's really awesome.
T: Now let's move on to relationship stuff. Can you tell us your biggest love or crush problem that you've had? And how you've dealt with it?
HK: Basically, I'm at a point in my life, my advice to the girls is that if you have to chase somebody to like you, then it's not worth it. They're not worth your time. I've been treated poorly in the past and stuff like that, and now if a guy, if I'm texting him and he doesn't respond and I text him again and he still doesn't respond, then he's obviously telling me something and you have to move on, and why waste your energy on somebody who's not going to give you 100% back? You just have to know that you're beautiful and the right person will come along, whether it's tomorrow, a week, next year. You have to be patient with that kind of stuff.
T: Definitely, that's awesome, yeah.
HK: So right now I'm just being patient. I'm waiting for my Cam Gigandet to show up at my front doorstep (laughs).
T: Do you have any other future projects or anything you're working on right now you'd like to mention?
HK: I shot my last Scooby Doo movie last June and that came out in October, that's Scooby-Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster, and the DVD is coming out this first quarter. So that'll be fun, definitely check that out. I play Velma. Also the single for The Stunners will be coming out this quarter as well so, look out for us. And that's about it. I'm just gonna try to book some huge movie at some point this year. That's my goal.
T: Thank you so much for your time Hayley and we really appreciate you talking to us!
