TWIST chatted with Taeyeon, Jessica, Sunny, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona and Seohyun of Girls' Generation. They dished on who they look up to and about their first English-language single, "The Boys!" Their video was the third most watched YouTube video after LMFAO's "Party Rock" and Justin Bieber's "Under the Mistletoe"! Check out our interview below and watch the video after the jump!
TWIST: How did you guys get together? Girls' Generation: We are all with SM entertainment. All the girls started practicing at a different age, some starting at ten years old, so we've all been together for a very long time. We're on our fourth year as a group. We've all known each other since we were really young and we're just like a big happy family. We're all sisters.
TWIST: Who are some of your musical influences? Girls' Generation: We've always been [fans] of Beyoncé, since she started at such a young age and grew into such an inspiring, iconic woman as an artist and as a woman. She's somebody we look up to and look forward to becoming like.
TWIST: Do you write your own music? Girls' Generation: We've been writing lyrics recently, but not composing yet. Some of us are slowly working on composing music, so we're looking forward to that as much as our fans are waiting for it.
TWIST: Where do you draw your inspiration for your lyrics? Girls' Generation: Sooyoung recently wrote the lyrics for one of our ballads and her inspiration was, since she's Christian, based on how she feels about God. Also [we pull] from personal experience and what we think about love or the emotions [in a] moment. [One of the girls] likes be open-minded when it comes to her experiences so that whenever it comes to writing, if it fits the song, she remembers those moments. And Taeyeon has like a notebook for all the things she wants to use for music or lyrics.
TWIST: If you guys could collaborate with any singer who would it be? Girls' Generation: We've got a lot of different answers: Justin Timberlake, Justin Bieber, the Glee cast. We're all really big fans. It would be fun to collab with them.
TWIST: Do you sing any of your songs in English? Girls' Generation: Our single will be released November 19th and it's called "The Boys," and we sing it in English. That's our first one, the first of many hopefully. Music is a universal language, and luckily we have such amazing fans who obviously are so dedicated in memorizing lyrics and getting things down. It's so amazing. It's not us at all: it's all the fans!
TWIST: Do you have any traditions you do before you perform? Girls' Generation: Hands in! We always do hands in, and our motto means "Right now, we're making it into a girls' generation!" We've been saying that for the past four and a half years so it's always a ritual. A few of us always get together and pray before we get on stage.
