Hey TWIST girls,
Denzel Whitaker, who'll costar in the upcoming movie Abduction with Taylor Lautner, just spilled to TWIST all the deets on this new action film! We can't wait for it to hit theaters in September. Check out our convo to learn all about the new movie and to hear what it was like for Denzel to reconnect with his old Nickelodeon pal, Taylor!
TWIST: Tell us a little bit about your character, Gilly, in Abduction.
Denzel: Pretty much the thing about Gilly is he is the best friend to Nate. Nathan is your all-around, everyday kid. He is going to school and having fun, but he finds a picture of himself on a missing persons website. All of a sudden it's this elaborate movie where he gets into trouble with the government agency and now people are coming after him. So he needs some help. So Gilly has pretty much been his best friend from when they were little. Pretty much Gilly is just there to support Nathan and help him out. He's loyal but at the same time he has a lot of connections that later help out Nathan.
TWIST: Are you anything like your character? Can you relate to him at all?
Denzel: Ah, you know my character is pretty laid back. I had a lot of fun playing this role because Gilly is just such a fun kid. And like me, I pretty much just let life come as it is. I just do what I do. That's how I figured he should be. When I went into the audition room, John told me just to be myself.
TWIST: What is one thing you would tell readers about why they have to see this movie?
Denzel: It's going to be epic! I know most of the readers are going to be excited to just see Taylor in an action movie. It's really a break out role for him that separates him from the Twilight series. But it is also going to have like full on action, it's going to have a love story of course.
TWIST: You knew Taylor before the film?
Denzel: We knew each other from back when we were both doing Nickelodeon. He was doing Sharkboy and Lavagirl and I was coming off All That. We actually met through mutual friends and sort of just hanging out. We'd hang out on the weekends and go to Six Flags. I hate roller coasters but I'd still hang out with the crew. It was just fun times.
TWIST: So I guess it was nice to have a familiar face on set starting out?
Denzel: Yeah it was great. Just going into the audition room, most people have jitters going into their first audition, especially if it's their first call but me, I walked right in and it was like I was hanging out with family and friends again. It helps out on set too if you already have the relationship when we're supposed to be friends on camera. It's not like you're building a base because you already have that and it naturally comes through on screen.
TWIST: Do you have any really fun memories from set?
Denzel: Definitely a lot of fun scenes. We have this great scene in the hallway where we basically get to freestyle. We have this teacher that we are supposed to be mocking. So we were doodling and drawing pictures and stuff like that, just being normal teenagers. Another fun scene is the wrestling scene towards the beginning of the movie. My character actually gets pinned down and body slammed. Taylor and our other friend sort of mock me for being slammed. OH! That reminds me of the REALLY fun scene; the party scene. You can see in the trailer. It was probably be the most fun to-date that I've had on set. It was just us being us. We were supposed to be hanging out doing us, and at this beautiful mansion. It was just great.
TWIST: Well we are definitely looking forward to seeing Abduction and thank you so much for talking with me.
Denzel: Of course. Thank you. I appreciate it.
