TWIST sat down to chat with Cobra Starship! Gabe, Alex and Ryland spilled on what it was like to make their new record Night Shades and who they would love to collaborate with. Check out our interview below!
TWIST: Tell me a little something about your new album. Alex: Our new album just came out, and it's called Night Shades. [There are] ten songs, and it took us about a year to make.
Gabe: There are a couple things that really make this record stand apart. One is the process. We got our own studio for this record! It really changes the record. We've always wanted to make our albums feel like mixed tapes. We do lots of different styles of music, and I think we expanded on that even more in this record. This record is probably our most personal record ever. It has more love songs than all the other Cobra records combined, but at the same time [it's] our most commercial record. I think that's part of the reason why it took us a while to make the record. After you've had one hit, there's much more pressure on you to replicate that success on another hit, so we wanted to make sure we didn't blow it for everybody. Good work, guys!
Ryland: We're very proud of it. [We] had a lot of good collaborations, and also did a lot of the production ourselves, which we're proud of.
TWIST: Can you tell me a bit about what it was like to have more love songs on the record? Gabe: I went through a really bad breakup right after "Good Girls" came out. It's almost pathetic how cliché it is that you get a little success and the love that was supporting you leaves you because you turned into a [jerk]. So I started to hate music, because it's the thing that took me away from the thing I loved. It took me a while to get into music again, and once I got into it I was writing all these depressing songs. I had to go through a lot of different things internally to get to a place where I wanted to write about those issues, but didn't just deal with them in terms of being completely depressing. I wanted to do stuff that spoke about love in a way that was inspiring.
TWIST: Can you guys tell me what your favorite song off the new album is and why? Ryland: My favorite song on the album is called "Anything for Love," and I like it because it reminds me of music from downtown New York in the early 80s.
Alex: My favorite song off the album is the track called "Shwick." It's actually the last song that we finished. We did something not-so-traditional with it as far as the structure goes.
TWIST: What would each of your dream collaborations be? Alex: I definitely got a little jazzed during the VMAs when Lady Gaga got to perform with Brian May. Crazed about that! That was a huge surprise! Pretty amazing!
Gabe: I think it would be awesome to do something with Taylor Swift. I love her lyrics. They're really honest. There's something everyone can relate to!
