Chances are that you currently love Ross Butler on either of his two mega-hit series, 13 Reasons Why and/or Riverdale. But if you're a longtime fan, you know that the actor played fan-favorite character Brett on Disney Channel's K.C. Undercover, opposite of queen Zendaya – who he credits as being amazing to work with and full of helpful advice for him when he was just starting out as a television actor.
"[K.C. Undercover] was one of my first big roles," Ross told Seventeen in a new interview. "Zendaya was great. She's been in this industry for so long so working with her was super eye-opening even though she's 6 or 7 years younger than I am. At the the time she was so well-versed, so I learned a lot from her."
Booking a role on K.C. was a huge moment for Ross, for a ton of different reasons.
"The biggest thing for me was that role galvanized me to continue to go down this road of changing Asian stereotypes," he shared. "The role was originally cast as African-American and then they recast. I went in for the chemistry reads and I was the only Asian guy in the room. There were three African Americans, a Caucasian guy, and me. I remember being really insecure like, 'I'm the token Asian, so they can pitch it and see how it looks but they are probably going to to go African American again. But when I found out that I booked it, I was like, 'Okay, this is something.' I booked a role that wasn't written for Asians and race didn't play into the character at all except for when they showed my dad, who was Asian — which made sense."
"I'm really grateful to them because it was my first sort of leading role on a Disney sitcom," he added. "The big thing was that it really gave me confidence that what I was doing wasn't for nothing."
