Editor's note: this is not an article, I just have things to say.
Miley Cyrus just dropped the highly-anticipated music video for her new song "Malibu," and as a 6-year Smiler, I was already planning on being left speechless by her release. But I wasn't exactly sure why. Most Miley fans can attest to that feeling – where you're left not quite knowing if the star will rip your heart out because she's delivering a heartfelt rendition of "Jolene," or leave your jaw on the floor because she's dressed up as a giant baby with a pacifier in a mouth.
The star already confessed that "Malibu" was going to be a change of pace she and her fandom alike welcomed: that she was returning to her roots a little bit with the country-inspired vocals, and both the sound and style of her music. She shared she was toning down the elaborate costumes and the "crazy Miley" we've come to know and love – so that honest musical criticisms couldn't so easily written off.
Miley told us she was going to get personal, and talk about her relationship with Liam Hemsworth – she never does that.
So then the video hits, and I'm reduced to a puddle of tears.
As the TWIST team was watching the "Malibu" video debut together in the office, one thought kept coming up: Miley's hair is really distracting.
First of all, girl's hair has gotten long on us all of a sudden. Remember when we were freaking out that Miley's hair was long enough to toss up in a bun again? Now her length is giving us mermaid vibes.
Also, the stark contrast between her dark brunette roots and her old jarring platinum blonde captures your attention throughout the music video. Arguably, the TWIST team shared, it's not her best hairstyle of all time, in the sense that it's not the most flattering of ombré colors.
But I'll argue that this hairstyle was actually the exact look she needed for this music video.
Why? Well, the music video and the song are all about coming back, returning, and starting over different than before but not ignoring what has passed. To the singer-songwriter feel of her early music that she left behind for Bangerz. To her relationship with Liam that had once ended but now seems to be stronger and more beautiful than ever.
She's letting her dark roots grow out, but she's not cutting off the blonde and going short again. She's not dying the platinum shade and pretending she's been brunette since her Hannah Montana days.
Her beachy waves remind us of her and Liam's Last Song days, but that's a whole other story to weep about.
"I never would've believed you if three years ago you told me," Miley sings on the track. "I'd be here writing this song/ But here I am, next to you/ The sky's more blue in Malibu."
It's all kind of perfect, really.
