Kendall Jenner debuted a shockingly drastic hair makeover in her latest advertisement, but that is not the main reason for all the attention the clip is receiving. The Pepsi commercial she starred in is getting a whole a lot of backlash for misrepresenting the recent racial protests that have occurred nationwide.
In the commercial, Kendall is all dolled up for a glamorous photo shoot. As she gets photographed while leaning in a doorway, she watches the peaceful protest happening right outside of the door. Soon Kendall realizes that she wants to join in the march – so she rips off her platinum blonde wig, wipes the dark lipstick off of her face and goes for it.
Kendall, who is standing in the front row of the crowd, then approaches a police officer and hands him a Pepsi. Cheering breaks out, as the supermodel's offering appears to completely repair the divide between protesters and police.
While the protesters in the commercial are upbeat and filled with joy, those who have experienced a Black Lives Matter protest will attest that this is a false depiction of the violence that has occurred.
Pepsi released a statement in response to those who were upset by the ad. "The creative showcases a moment of unity, and a point where multiple storylines converge in the final advert. It depicts various groups of people embracing a spontaneous moment, and showcasing Pepsi’s brand rallying cry to ‘Live For Now,’ in an exploration of what that truly means to live life unbounded, unfiltered and uninhibited," the company said in the statement.
