Did you know that November is Diabetes Awareness Month? Awkward star Jillian Rose Reed knows just how important it is for diabetics like her older brother Matt to stay healthy and feel included with family mealtimes and activities, and she told us all about it after walking in the American Diabetes Association's LA Step Out Walk last week.
"The good news about snacking, is that [even] if you don't have diabetes, you can still enjoy some tasty treats with your friends and family that do!" Jillian tells TWIST exclusively. "My family loves to watch movies, and our go-to snack is popcorn! When you make popcorn from scratch (with no artificial flavoring) it's high in fiber, as well as low in sugar and calories. It's a yummy snack for everyone!"
Jillian also makes sureto eat balanced and nutritous foods herself. "If you're anything like me, you're always on the run. Sometimes it's hard for me to sit down with a full meal!" she says. "My favorite ADA recipe is their low carb lunchbox. Pack a to-go lunch with a hard boiled egg, some apples, and almonds for protein!"
For sugar-free recipe ideas to try with your family, you can check out the ADA's website. Happy snacking!
