"My closet is full of clothes, like I have so many things I can barely store them. But I really don't like a lot of it and not many things fit me right anymore. My mom won't let me go shopping because I have tons of clothes and don't have room for new stuff but how do I tell her nothing is my size or style anymore? She says I'm still growing too so I don't need a lot, but I don't want my dorky stuff!" - Cassidy, 13
Believe it or not, I have the perfect idea! This has happened to me many times because as we buy new clothes, we forget about the old items in the back of our closets. Soon enough, our drawers seem to be overflowing, and all of a sudden we don’t have enough hangers!
Your first step is to clean out your closet! And make sure to do this with your mom. It will be a way for you guys to spend some time together. But more specifically, it will help you get rid of the clothes you don’t wear or that don’t fit you. Get some big plastic trash bags and throw all of the clothes that you don’t want anymore in the bags. With the help of your mom, she can actually visually see how much you are putting in the bags. Maybe even give her a fashion show! Try on the clothes that you don’t think fit anymore and show her. Chances are if you notice they don’t fit, she will too!
The next step is to let your mom know that you aren’t just going to throw all of these clothes out. You should tell her you want to donate them! Either to Goodwill or some other charity organization that takes clothes. There are so many people out there who are less fortunate and would absolutely LOVE new clothes, even if someone else has worn them once or twice before. Not only will you be making somebody feel great but you will most definitely feel great about yourself knowing that you did a good deed for the day. (Which of course, means good karma for you in the future!)
Only after you’ve done all of the above is it time to ask your mom to go shopping. She will most likely be willing to let you buy some new stuff since you donated a lot of your wardrobe already. By doing this, it shows that you are a mature and responsible teen who is growing into your own sense of style.
When you do go shopping, take your mom with you! This will help her understand what your new style is so if she ever wants to buy you something while you aren’t with her she will know exactly what to get!
