A.J. McLean is best known as being one of the members of the Backstreet Boys, but the singer is working on a solo album that features a powerful song, "Live Together." The song tackles the heavy – yet important! – issues that are going on in the world today, such as violence, tolerance and acceptance.
"'Live Together' is kind of a standalone song, it’s more about the movement, waking people up, opening people’s eyes. Everybody these days is constantly on social media — Twitter, Instagram — and I was too, and I decided one day to be a little bit more knowledgeable about what’s going on in the world. So I downloaded the CNN app and I live on that daily now," A.J. tells TWIST. "Every day, it’s something else, all this stuff that’s going on the world, and seeing all of the bad things going on I thought, ‘This is ridiculous, someone has to say something.’"
And that is how A.J. came up with the idea for the song, which he created with his producer partner, Jordan James. The video was shot over the course of 3 days and the last 2 days were shot at Disney's Golden Oak Ranch, so it has a vibe on an actual movie to it. Along with filming this video, A.J. and Jordan raised money for his Live Together Foundation, and the proceeds allowed for him and his team to fix up a music room in a high school in Pasadena, California. He hopes he can change people's mindsets with this song, and in a big way, he already has.
"Being in my shoes, I hate to quote Spider-Man, but with great power, comes great responsibility and we as artists and celebrities have that power to affect our generation, and the future, which are the kids, and if I can reel people in in a positive way, that’s all I’m trying to do," A.J. continues.
The singer just hopes "Live Together" will make a positive change and inspire others to really "see the way we treat each other" in hopes that the world will "find a more healthy, verbal way to communicate."
"I want people to see this video and see that we don’t need to result to violence so quickly. People are people, we’re all the same, we bleed the same, we put our pants on the same way. Who cares if someone is different? We should just accept people," A.J. says. And that couldn't be more true.
