TWIST Chats with Tay and Kate!

TWIST: Can you tell us about your sound and the music you play?
Kate: We're just two young girls doing music that young girls can listen to. It's kind of like a mixture between country and pop, and we try to make our sound as unique as possible, but try to make it to where girls our age can relate to it.
Tay: We just want to get a good message across to young girls like Taylor Swift did for us.

TWIST: How did you guys meet?
Tay: For me, it's really hard to be named Taylor, write your own songs and play guitar in Nashville because there's someone whose already done that fantastically, so I just got the idea of [forming] a duo. I wanted a duo to be really fun, and to find someone who is like me, a little weird. I found Kate on YouTune singing a Kelly Pickler cover and a Taylor Swift cover. It turned out that she lived really close by. We just clicked. We're the best of friends. We're basically sisters.

TWIST: What made you get into music in the first place?
Kate: For me, I had two older sisters. Performing with them when I was younger was so easy because I had two other people with me, so I wasn't alone. They helped me get past my fear of going on stage and performing and being in front of people.

TWIST: Did you teach yourself to play guitar or did someone teach you?
Tay: I started learning to play about five years ago. I've had a few lessons here and there, but I mostly taught myself how to play. Kate is the same way, but she's only been playing for about a year.

TWIST: You guys are such huge Taylor Swift fans, so what is it about Taylor that you love so much?
Kate: What I love about Taylor is that she can connect to people through her lyrics. She also is a good role model to younger girls because of her lyrics and her personality and just the way she treats her fans.
Tay: What I love so much about her is the way she can write a song for every different mood or feeling a young girl can have. She enforces that it's OK to be hurt and it's OK to be happy and to believe in love. I think it's really great that there's somebody out there that can share that.

TWIST: Can you tell me about the birthday tribute you did for her?
Tay: We wanted to find a unique way to say "happy birthday" to her, so we thought, "What are the ways to make sure she sees it or hears it?" We were like, "You know what? Let's jus put it on the radio!" We got our Christmas money together and went to 107.5 here in Nashville to buy a bunch of ads. We wrote a song to the tune of her single "Ours," which we absolutely love. We knew she'd like it because it's her new single. We just wanted to say thank you, because her music brought us together.

TWIST: Do you know if she's heard it?
Kate: We're not sure, but we really hope she did, just because she's such a huge inspiration to us and it took a lot of our time.

TWIST: If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be?
Kate: We have a lot of people we'd love to collaborate with. If it was country, of course Taylor Swift. That would be awesome. We love Rascal Flats too. They've always been a huge inspiration to us. If we went more on the pop side, probably Justin Bieber because we're really big Justin Bieber fans.

T: Why should TWIST readers check out your music?
Tay: We are just girls from small towns who are pursuing their dreams. We're huge Taylor Swift fans; we love the message that she's created and we want to give the same kind of message to the upcoming generation.
Kate: We sit down and write stuff for people our age, so I definitely think listening to our music could definitely help TWIST readers find songs that are appropriate for their age and that can maybe get them through hard times.
