Hey Girls!
I got to meet an amazing singer-songwriter last week, 14-year-old Jessarae! Check out his cover of Tracy Chapman's "Give Me One Reason" in the video above and eavesdrop on our convo after the jump! He talks about writing love songs and reveals his relationship status. There's also another video where he tells us about his favorite Halloween costume!
What to hear more? Check out his myspace and website. His song, "Uh-Oh" is so catchy! You'll love it.
TWIST: Where do you get your inspiration to write your songs?
Jessarae: It's what I'm feeling inside. Luckily, I don't have to really have to go through what some of the songs that I have are about, but it's spur of the moment and the mood I'm feeling at the time.
TWIST: What singer-songwriters do you like?
Jessarae: I love Jason Mraz, Jack Johnson and Ray LaMontagne. My favorite is Damien Rice.
TWIST: Do you write happy songs or melancholy songs?
Jessarae: When I first started writing my songs, the main people I listened to had a very depressing style of music, so that's how my songs turned out. One of the first songs I wrote I played for my parents. I had three long pages of lyrics and the song must have been 10 minutes long. The whole song was like "I love you and why did you have to die! Die! Die!" My dad's sitting there and he had tears in his eyes because he was laughing so hard. I thought he was crying because he was really into it, but he was laughing! The song was about this girl I liked who left me. She didn't actually die, but that's how I was feeling at the time.
TWIST: Does everyone at school try to figure out who your songs are about?
Jessarae: Yeah! They ask me, but I honestly try and keep it mysterious.
TWIST: A lot of your songs are about love. Have you ever had a girlfriend?
Jessarae: I've had a few experiences, but nothing as deep as what my songs are about. Thankfully. But, I have a love.
TWIST: Oh, you have a girlfriend?
Jessarae: My mama (is my love).
