TWIST chills with Shontelle!

Hey TWIST readers!

Singer Shontelle recently stopped by the TWIST offices to dish about her album, Shontelligence, out in stores November 18! We chatted with Shontelle about the first time she heard her single "T-shirt" on the radio, her must-have beauty product and her fave outfit!

TWIST: We've all heard your single and we LOVE it! Tell us about the first time you heard it on the radio!
Shontelle: I freaked! I was like, "OHMIGOD! Is this real?" You get so used to hearing it over and over on a CD because you have to learn it and then it's playing. You're like, "Yeah, my song's playing on my computer." Then you're like, "Wait a minute! That's the radio! OH MY GOSH!"

TWIST: Did you hear the introduction of the DJ saying, "This is 'T-shirt' by Shontelle"?
Shontelle: No! I missed that! I just walked into the room and the song was playing. I just assumed that, as usual, it was my laptop. Then I realized it was the radio and the DJ was like, "And that's 'T-shirt' by Shontelle! You're gonna love this song!" So it was kind of cool, hearing the DJ talk about it and not just playing it. Actually saying good stuff about you and the song.

TWIST: That's awesome! Where were you? Were you with any friends?
Shontelle: No, I was at home. I was listening to Z100, and when it came on, I was going nuts!

TWIST: Is there a personal story behind "T-Shirt"?
Shontelle: I think all girls know what that's like - what it feels like to not be with your crush or your boyfriend. For example, someone on Myspace told me about her boyfriend going to Iraq and that she was going to miss him so much. Whatever reason you can't be with that special person, having their T-shirt is the best thing because you can either hug it and pretend it's them or you can wear it and feel close to them. And it usually smells like the person, so that's comforting!

TWIST: What's your favorite song on the album?
Shontelle: I really love "T-Shirt," but I think I have a few favorite songs. "Battle Cry" is one of my favorites. I call that "my world anthem." It's a song for everybody saying, "Even though times may be hard for whatever reason you may be experiencing individually, let's just all come together and be as one, and not let things get to us. Let's just stand up together and be strong and overcome whatever might be in your way."

TWIST: Is there any sort of message that you want to get across to young girls with your music?
Shontelle: Yes! With the music on my album, it has a lot of messages for young girls, especially. I know a lot of girls have insecurities. I just want them to know that you don't have to be insecure because everyone is special. No matter how perfect you think someone looks, there is something about them that is not that great and not that perfect. I would love to tell girls to be strong and smart and cool and learn to have fun and balance everything. Don't get caught up in the self-image stuff. Don't beat yourself up over that. Just be strong and confident.

TWIST: What sort of feelings do you get when you perform these songs? Do you get emotional?
Shontelle: I do because there are only three on the album that I didn't write or co-write, so I'm really attached. When I sing them, it's literally my words. I'm really telling you what I'm feeling. So it's a lot of sharing real thoughts and real feelings.

TWIST: Have you had your heart broken? What did you do to move on?
Shontelle: One time, there was this guy, he was the hottest guy in our neighborhood! And I was determined to get him. Then when I actually did, it was kind of weird because he was a little bit older than me. So I couldn't do all the things that he got to do. I couldn't go out to all these places. Then, one day, he rode over to my house on his bike and told me it was over! I was crushed! I cried. I was so sad. Then, 10 minutes later, I realized he was a jerk and that's why he doesn't have me anymore. I deserve better. Then, to get over it, since I used to play tennis in school, I would take my tennis racket and a ball at a wall. I'd pretend the wall was him and hours would go by!

TWIST: How old were you?
Shontelle: 13 or 14. I was really heartbroken. It was the first time I ever got dumped.

TWIST: First and last time, right?
Shontelle: Yeah! I was like, "This is never gonna happen to me again!"

TWIST: What's your favorite go-to outfit for a girls' night out?
Shontelle: I LOVE little dresses. A little dress and heels. Another thing I love to wear is a pair of skinny jeans. I keep it really basic with the clothes, and then accessorize everything with really cool bracelets, earrings, sunglasses, bags and heels.

TWIST: Where do you find your cool jewelry?
Shontelle: I get a lot of my jewelry on the street from vendors. I find really cool places and stores. Also, Aldo, Claire's, H&M and Forever 21 all have really cool and cheap stuff!

TWIST: What beauty tips do you have?
Shontelle: Moisture. Moisture. Moisture. It is so important! I am obsessive about lotion! I have to put it all over me, on my hands and feet and legs. Wherever there's skin, there's lotion. I don't want dry hands. When I shake people's hands, if mine are rough, I don't want to shake them because I feel so embarrassed!

TWIST: Which celeb were you most excited to meet?
Shontelle: I get excited to meet everyone! It was really fun hanging out on the Glow in the Dark tour. There were a lot of celebrities that would come through that were there to hang out with their other celeb friends so that was really cool. It was like me, Rihanna, Chris Brown, Jay-Z, Lupe Fiasco. We were all hanging out and that was a lot of fun. I'm new, so it was really fun to see the other side. It was cool to see these people that were, for me, just on TV. And then getting to see their personalities was really cool.
